SPC flooring, underlay and underfloor heating: comfort and insulation
11 March 2026

When choosing a floor, distinguish between comfort underfoot, building insulation and compatibility with underfloor heating. These are related but different considerations.
SPC and thermal insulation
SPC panels have a rigid mineral-polymer core. Their surface can feel pleasant to the touch, but a thin floor finish does not replace insulation in the floor structure or beneath a ground floor. It cannot, by itself, justify promises of specific energy savings.
Underfloor heating: consider the complete assembly
Choose a panel expressly approved for underfloor heating. Check the combined thermal resistance of the panel and underlay, as well as the maximum surface temperature in the documentation. Greater insulation is not always an advantage when heat needs to pass from the heating system into the room.
Underlay and acoustics
Integrated underlay can reduce walking noise. Acoustic performance should be checked separately from thermal performance. Do not place extra underlay beneath a factory-attached layer unless the particular system’s instructions permit it.
How should you compare products?
Compare intended use, construction, wear layer, use class and installation requirements. A good choice suits the room, subfloor and heating system and has clear technical specifications.
